The organisers of the Rio2016 Olympics have committed a serious blunder by listing the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) as ‘Macedonia’ on their official website, according to sports website ‘Gazzetta.gr’.
Despite the clear instructions by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the small state to be listed as ‘FYROM’, which is its official name as recognised by the United Nations, the Brazilian Rio organising committee used the abbreviation MKD on its website. The website also refers to FYROM as ‘Macedonia’ in a series of articles on its site about the various sports. The matter came to the attention of the Greek Olympic Committee and its President Isidoros Kouvelos, who will take the necessary actions to rectify the error.
