Greek Defence Minister Panos Kammenos was in London on Thursday for the UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial taking place at Lancaster House on Thursday. While in London, Kammenos met UK Secretary of State for Defence Michael Fallon and discussed the possibility of joint training of Greek and British armed forces.
Talking to reporters, Kammenos said that Greece will actively participate, both with armed forces’ personnel and in the role of trainer, to the effort to set up a Coast Guard in the framework of NATO. Commenting on the refugee crisis, he repeated that Greece has launched a series of initiatives to deal with the problems but also noted a need to allow refugees to return to their country to live in safety.
“There is a discussion on a political level on the possibility that the UN could participate, in the near future, in setting up safe camps in Syria,” he said, adding that this was discussed in talks between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and U.S. President Barack Obama.
Kammenos repeated that Greecewill not participate in any military operation but could help with extensive operations to patrol the regions of the sea between Crete, Cyprus, the Suez, Libya and Malta where trafficking of people and goods is known to take place. Better control of this region will also serve to stop the financing of terrorism, he added.
