Cyprus president notes "considerable progress” on CyProb talks

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has stated that “the chapter that concerns the authority of the constituent states to conclude international agreements has, in essence, closed,” after holding his latest talks with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci on Wednesday.

In his remarks to reporters following the latest talks aimed at resolving the Cyprus Problem, Anastasiades outlined that “there was an in-depth discussion and there was considerable progress.”

The President added that “some issues remain to be discussed in more detail between the interlocutors.”

TIMEFRAMES

When questioned if any timeframes have been discussed, Anastasiades said: “There are no strict timeframes, there is not any arbitration; there is simply a dialogue plan set-up in order to overcome difficulties.”

He added: “It is not a tight timeframe in order to lead to any arbitrations that are neither provided for, nor can they be accepted.

INTERNATIONAL TALKS

Asked whether the discussion on the property issue will take place next month abroad, the President clarified that “no meeting has been set-up.”

In response to a question as to what are the conditions that would favour the convening of a multilateral conference, Anastasiades commented that “the negotiations must conclude to such a degree on the remaining five chapters, and for the sixth to remain which concerns third parties as well, because it is an international treaty.”

The President concluded that “it concerns the Republic of Cyprus, Britain, Greece and Turkey. If no satisfactory progress takes place beforehand, how can I go to discuss about the international aspect which is, inter alia, security, guarantees.”

UN NEGOTIATIONS

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied the island`s northern third.

Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
