Victoria Nuland to visit Cyprus for talk on CyProb progress

Victoria Nuland, the US State Department’s Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, is expected to visit Cyprus this month, reported CNA English.

According to a Washington source, the date most likely for Nuland’s visit is on October 14.

According to the same sources, CNA English reported that the aim for Nuland’s visit is to express US support to the intensive Cyprus settlement talks that are taking place between President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

Influential members from within the Cypriot expat US-based community, with contacts to the State Department, told CNA English that they received assurances that Nuland would not exert any pressure on both leaders.

Initial plans also involve trips to Ankara and Athens by Nuland, but do not seem likely at this stage, reported CNA English.

Nuland previously visited Cyprus on July 12 where she met with both Anastasiades and Akinci.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied its northern third. Peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunify the country under a federal roof.
