Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci are set to hold a new meeting on Monday afternoon as their ongoing UN-led talks, aiming to solve the Cyprus Problem, enter a new week.
In statements after their last meeting, a week ago, Anastasiades stated that there was “sufficient progress” that allows them to “take the process to the next stage” and hold a meeting on territory abroad, reportedly Switzerland.
In a speech he delivered on Sunday, Anastasiades outlined that “so far we have been able to achieve convergences, improve provisions even on the 1960 Constitution, in many areas, so that we can create the prospects ensuring Hellenism’s future survival.”
The President added that he and Akinci are working on “safeguarding the freedom of movement, freedom of abode, freedom of property and freedom of exercising a profession wherever any Cypriot decides to do so.”
Anastasiades further added on Sunday that, “we are working so that each constituent state will have its own legislative and executive powers, not by abolishing the central government but by protecting the rights of both communities.“
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and illegally occupied its northern third.
Peace talks between Anastasiades and Akinci have been underway since May 2015, aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
