EU representative Mogherini to hold CyProb talks with Anastasiades, Akinci

EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy High Representative Federica Mogherini is set to visit Nicosia on Friday and hold meetings with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

Mogherini will be accompanied by EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides, who previously was Anastasiades’ Government Spokesperson between 2013-14.

Mogherini will discuss issues related to the Cyprus Problem and the ongoing peace talks as well as foreign policy matters.

According to the official schedule, Mogherini will first be received by Anastasiades which will be followed by EU-Cyprus consultations with Kasoulides and their respective delegations.

Mogherini and Kasoulides will afterwards make statements to the media, according to the schedule.

Later on Friday, Mogherini is set travel to the occupied areas for a meeting with Akinci.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and illegally occupied the island’s northern third. UN-led talks, between Anastasiades and Akinci, have been underway since May 2015 with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof.
