Cyprus National Council to begin preparations for Swiss-based talks

Cyprus Republic’s National Council, the top advisory body to the President Nicos Anastasiades on the Cyprus Problem, are scheduled to convene on Sunday to begin preparations on the UN-led peace talks at Mont Pelerin, Switzerland, between 7-11 November.

The Swiss-based talks will concentrate on the territory issue, reported CNA English.

Parliamentary party leaders, comprising the National Council, are set to be briefed by Anastasiades on the latest developments concerning the ongoing negotiations.

The Council is expected to decide if party leaders will accompany the President to Switzerland.

Anastasiades’ team, comprising no more than 20 to 25 people, will include experts and legal advisors.

Prior to the meeting, the President said that he expects to have the Council’s support.

Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, have been engaged in UN-led peace talks since May 2015 aiming to reunite the island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion and illegal occupation, under a federal roof.
