Cyprus President decides against Council attendance at Swiss talks

President Nicos Anastasiades announced today that he will not be accompanied to Mont Pelerin, Switzerland by National Council members for the upcoming Cyprus Problem talks due to be held between November 7 to 11.

The President presided today (Sunday) over a National Council meeting where the government and political party leaders discussed the latest developments concerning the Cyprus Problem.

After the meeting, Deputy Government Spokesperson Viktoras Papadopoulos told journalists that “following the exchange of views today, the President of the Republic decided that he will not be accompanied to Mont Pelerin by members of the National Council, but only by the members of his negotiating team and his close associates.”

Papadopoulos said that the Council had “exchanged views on the upcoming talks on the territorial issue, in Mont Pelerin, Switzerland, as well as on what must be the position of the Greek Cypriot side on whatever may possibly come up.”

On the overall conclusion following today’s meeting, Papadopoulos added: “There was an exchange of views and analysis on the talks currently taking place. Positions, views, concerns and suggestions were also expressed.

When commenting on whether there is a possibility that the guarantees issue will be discussed during the Swiss-based talks, the Spokesperson refused to confirm but outlined that “the two issues will be discussed separately.”

Papadopoulos concluded by saying: “In Mont Pelerin, which the official UN announcement also mentions, there will be a discussion mainly on the territorial issue, but also on some other open issues, some other points and disagreements that exist on other issues.”

Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, have been engaged in UN-led peace talks since May 2015 aiming to reunite the island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion and illegal occupation, under a federal roof.
