Foreign Minister: Russia wants Turkish troops to leave Cyprus

Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides stated that Russia’s position is similar to that of Nicosia on the need to fully withdraw foreign Turkish troops illegally occupying the Republic’s territory.

Kasoulides and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov made the statement at a joint press conference after their talks in Moscow.

We know that the Russian position is alike to ours on the need to fully withdraw foreign troops from Cyprus territory,” stated Kasoulides.

Lavrov and Kasoulides also said that they discussed the European Council’s upcoming Cyprus chairmanship that will last from November 22, 2016 to May 19, 2017.

Additionally, they discussed regional affairs, including the ongoing Syria crisis.

Peace talks aimed at reunifying Cyprus are moving into a crucial phase next month, as Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will conduct negotiations at Mont Pelerin, Switzerland between November 7-11 on the territorial issue.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and illegally occupied its northern third.

UN-led talks resumed in May 2015 aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
