Cyprus talks enter deeper waters in Switzerland on Monday afternoon

Cyprus talks in Switzerland are expected to enter deeper waters on Monday afternoon, Sigma TV’s correspondent has said.

Sigma’s sources have said that President Nicos Anastasiades, Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, their two negotiators Andreas Mavroyiannis and Baris Burcu, and their spokespersons Nikos Christodoulides and Baris Brucu will take part in the meeting at 5:30 pm.

The same sources have told Sigma that the meeting will have an open agenda, and that Nicosia expects the substantive negotiation on certain aspects of the four chapters in the Cyprus problem will be covered.

At the same time, sources said, it is expected that there will be some differences on the agenda.

After the meeting, President Anastasiades will meet with the entirety of his negotiating team, sources mentioned.

In regards to the schedule, sources told Sigma that some time has already been lost, and at the end of the process, on Friday, there will be a statement only if there is progress.

Balanced estimation

On the presence of the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon at the talks, sources said that Ban’s message was a balanced estimation of the talks to date.

Sources said that Ban also presented the most difficult topics and where there is the most difference between both sides, which are the property and territory issues.

Ban had said in his opening speech that he hopes a solution to the Cyprus problem could be found during his time as Secretary General of the UN.

In their statements to the press, the two leaders spoke about their positions, with President Anastasiades focusing on the territory issue.
