A symbolism-laden address by outgoing US President Barack Obama in Athens next week, with the Acropolis as a backdrop, has been reportedly cancelled due to security concerns.
Press reported had stated that Obama would deliver his address on Wednesday from the Pnyx (Pnyka) archaeological site, which lies to the west and southwest of the Acropolis. Today’s pine-covered hill was the venue used by the ancient Athenians to host their popular assemblies, and thus a landmark in the development of democracy.
According to reports, the US president’s upcoming Athens address is focused on the values of democracy, with the prospective venue having lent enormous symbolism.
A complete itinerary has yet to be announced, and the Pnyx address had not been officially confirmed by the US side.
According to unconfirmed reports in the Greek capital, the new Niarchos center in coastal Athens will be used for the address.
Obama is due in Athens on Tuesday.
