Cyprus has condemned the anniversary for the unilateral declaration of independence of the so called ‘TRNC’ in a statement on Tuesday.
The statements said that 33 years ago Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership had gone forward with the “illegal declaration of independence of the so called ‘TRNC’.”
“This action led to the condemning reaction of the international community, which through a series of resolutions at the United Nations Security Council characterised the action as legally invalid and invited the rest of the UN members to not recognise the so called state,” the announcement form the Presidential Palace said.
The statements added that the government is working to stop the ‘illegality’ and in the framework of international law and the European Union’s values reunify the country on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal, federation.
Cyprus, the statement said, is also seeking to liberate the country of occupying forces.
“In this framework are the attempts underway with ongoing negotiations, between the leaders of the two communities, not the breakaway regime and the Republic of Cyprus,” the statement said.
The statement added that in the coming days negotiations will start again in Switzerland, with the goal being to agree on the “critical issue of territory,” which will allow for the next step in negotiations, an international conference on security, to begin alongside further intensified talks.
