Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades is scheduled to depart for Athens at 10am (local time) on Wednesday morning to hold talks with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
The main issue during their scheduled talks, expected to begin between 6-6:30pm, will be latest developments concerning the Cyprus Problem.
The meeting will be held at Maximos Mansion and will also be attended by their respective Foreign Ministers, Greece’s Nikos Kotzias and Cyprus’ Ioannis Kasoulides.
The Cyprus President will also meet with Greek opposition party leaders before heading back to the island on Thursday afternoon.
OBAMA’S CYPRUS TALKS
Anastasiades’ visit will come as US President Barack Obama will depart Athens for Berlin after he also held talks with Tsipras on the Cyprus issue on Tuesday.
Obama said at a joint press conference with Tsipras: “We are encouraged by the progress that has been made. I think there is a window in the next weeks, months where this issue will be actually resolved
“This is ultimately a negotiation between Cypriots, Greek and Turkish Cypriots,” said Obama, adding that “the good news was that the two leaders were sincerely dedicated to the effort to find a solution for the benefit of the two peoples.”
BACKGROUND
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied its northern third.
Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have been engaged in UN-led negotiations since May 2015, with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
