Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades received the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Cyprus, Mathew Kidd today, at the Presidential Palace.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said that following the meeting Kidd spoke of the real opportunity and significant progress which has been achieved in the Mont Pelerin talks, and added that the UK hopes a multi-party event will follow within the year.
“I think there is an opportunity. From what I have heard, a lot of progress was made last week and the leaders are in the stage where one last burst of activity can settle that which is really good.”
Kidd reaffirmed that the UK is supportive of a multilateral event. “We very much hope it can work and we will be looking to the leaders to explain to us how they want us to play our part to be as positive as we can.”
The UK High Commissioner also mentioned that he believes the President has already started to consider the idea of a multilateral event, though he added that Anastasiades’ focus is currently on the next few days, during which the two leaders will meet in Geneva to continue the reunification talks.
President Anastasiades is expected to update political party leaders at today’s plenary session regarding the Cyprus talks.
