European Parliament President Martin Schulz has said that both sides need to continue Cyprus reunification talks, after talks in Mont Pelerin on territorial adjustment reached an impasse on Monday evening.
In a tweet, Schulz said: “A solution for all Cypriots is within reach. I call on both sides to continue Cyprus reunification talks with more good resolve than ever.”
Talks on the territory issue had failed to produce an agreement. The UN said in a statement that if the leaders had been able to reach an agreement on territory it, “would have paved the way for the last phase of the talks,” the statement added.
“The two sides have decided to return to Cyprus and reflect on the way forward,” it continued, with Anastasiades scheduled to return to the island at 2pm (local time) on Tuesday.
UN Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, “will bring these developments to the attention of the Secretary-General [Ban Ki-moon],” concluded the statement.
Refusal to return Morphou
The Turkish Cypriot leader’s spokesperson Baris Burcu said in statements after the meeting on Monday night that “The Turkish Cypriot side did not see good intention from the Greek side.”
CNA sources have also said on Tuesday that Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci’s refusal to return Morphou had led to the collapse in negotiations on the territory issue.
On his part though, government spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides said – commenting on whether the Cyprus talks could now be in danger – “it’s too early to make such assessments,” while underlining that the “Greek Cypriot side is constantly committed to its goal to creating conditions that will pave the way for a positive outcome.”
Akinci is expected to make statements after his return to Cyprus this afternoon.
Before his return, Akinci is expected to stop over in Istanbul.
