The UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide has returned to Cyprus following the two days of intensive negotiations in Mont Pelerin to assure the two leaders that the UN continues to support their efforts.
Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci held two rounds of UN-led talks in Mont Pelerin in November on the territory aspect of the Cyprus problem.
However, the UN announced after the end of talks on Monday evening that, despite their best efforts, the leaders were not able to achieve the necessary further convergences on criteria for territorial adjustment that would have paved the way for the last phase of the talks.
REFLECT AND PROCEED
Eide is expected to meet with President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in the coming days to assure them that the UN is looking forward to a constructive future, a UN spokesperson has previously stated.
“The game is not over,” UN sources have said, adding that “the UN will regroup and continue” their efforts.
The UN has expressed the desire to see both sides reflecting on what has been achieved so far and deciding how they want to proceed in the hope for a successful conclusion.
“We need to pick up where we have left off,” the UN concluded.
