European Union Parliament calls temporary freeze on Turkey's accession

The European Parliament has called on the Commission and member states to temporarily freeze accession negotiations with Turkey, reports said on Wednesday.

A resolution, to be presented for voting on Thursday, says that “it commits to review its position when the disproportionate measures under the state of emergency in Turkey are lifted.

The resolution also mentions that the EU “will base its review on whether the rule of law and human rights are restored throughout the country; considers a possible lifting of the state of emergency an appropriate moment to do so.

The EU has reaffirmed that if capital punishment is re-introduced in Turkey then there would a formal suspension of the accession process.

The resolution also mentions that Turkey’s entrance into the customs union is important for Ankara, and that a suspension of the work would have serious economic consequences for Turkey.
