National Council looks to adopt common position after Cyprus failed talks

A new National Council meeting will be held as soon as possible, deputy government spokesperson Victoras Papadopoulos said on Thursday, after the meeting, where the members discussed the failed Cyprus talks in Mont Pelerin.

Papadopoulos said that today’s meeting was held in a climate of mutual good will, where President Anastasiades was able to inform the leaders of the political parties on the talks in Mont Pelerin in detail.  

The President, he added, has informed the body on all the actions his taking since his return to Cyprus, “so that the interruption of talks can be overcome, and they can restart as soon as possible from the point where they left off.” 

Papadopoulos said that President Anastasiades has reaffirmed his position to the National Council that as long as the process to slip as long as it is in his hands.

Regarding the positive attitude of world leaders, Papadopoulos said that the President will continue speaking to leaders, and will address other in writing where necessary.  

Papadopoulos added that President Anastasiades will analyse the Cyprus talks in detail during the next European Council meeting.  

Asked about Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and the cooperation with Greece, Papadopoulos said that that the cooperation between Athens and Nicosia is excellent.  

He added that the President is in constant contact with the Greek government and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

AKEL: THERE WILL BE A SECOND MEETING TO COORDINATE 

AKEL party Secretary General Andros Kyprianou has said that the situation is difficult and that today’s meeting was for an initial exchange of opinions on the way forward. 

He added that there will be a second meeting to further coordinate the Greek Cypriot side’s next steps.

Kyprianou reaffirmed his party’s position that the only way forward is to restart negotiations from where they left off, and for the Greek Cypriot side to be well prepared for the continuation of talks.

DIKO SUPPORTS GREECE’S POSITION

DIKO head Nicholas Papadopoulos has said that Turkey’s intransigence is at fault for the impasse at talks in Mont Pelerin.  

He added that during talks the Turkish Cypriot side had presented unacceptable positions in cooperation with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.  

Papadopoulos has welcomed Greece’s position and Kotzias’ position, saying that Greece is a trusted ally for Cyprus in this process.

COLLECTIVE MANAGEMENT NEEDED TO STRENGTHEN G/C POSITION

The head of the EDEK party Marinos Sizopoulos has said that collective management to strengthen the Greek Cypriot position is need.  

Sizopoulos added that from what they heard from the President, the Turkish side’s position and their unwillingness to submit a map had led to the failure of negotiations.

TURKEY’S FINAL GOAL RAISING QUESTIONS

Symmachia Politon leader Yiorgos Lillikas has said that Turkey is responsible for the impasse and that Ankara has specific strategies and goals to lead the discussions to an impasse.  

“We should be concerned by Turkey’s final goal…a study should be conducted on the tactics they [Turkey] are following, so we can react accordingly,” he said.

POSITIVE A COMMON POSITION IS TAKEN

Solidarity Movement leader Eleni Theocharous has said that it is positive the President has agreed to host another National Council meeting to formulate a common position on the Cyprus issue. 

ACTIVE INTEREST ON PART OF RUSSIA

Green Party leader Giorgos Perdikis has said that Cyprus needs to take advantage of active interest the members of the UN Security Council, such as Russia, are showing.  

Perdikis said that the problem in Mont Pelerin arose due to the fact that Turkey wants to determine the structure and content of the multi-lateral conference

He added that Ankara is seeking to force the process into an arbitration against the Greek Cypriot side.

ELAM: TURKEY IS RESPONSIBLE

The ELAM party said in an announcement after the meeting that Turkey is responsible for the impasse in Mont Pelerin.  

The party added that the negotiations need to be based on the creation of a single unitary state.
