EU Commission head Juncker supports Italy and Greece on refugee issue

In an interview to the Italian newspaper “La Stampa”, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker reiterated that “we cannot leave Greece and Italy all alone to address the immigration issue”, stressing that 400,000 people in total have been rescued in the Mediterranean.

We have approved special funds of 15 billion euro for the refugee issue and we will continue that way”, stressed Juncker, adding that refugees should be relocated to all EU member states; the outcome so far is “ridiculously inadequate”, since “only 7,500 people have been relocated, whereas the two-year provision was 160,000 people”.

I will always find it unacceptable that some countries do not abide by the relevant legal framework and that a prime minister says ‘I won’t take Muslims in my country’. These statements negate European history in its whole”, he said.
