US VP Pence and Anastasiades discuss latest Cyprus issue developments

US Vice-President-elect Mike Pence has expressed his will to further deepen the close relationship between Cyprus and Washington, during a phone call with President Nicos Anastasiades on Thursday. 

A statement from Cyprus’ presidential palace said that Pence has shared US President-elect Donal Trump’s greetings to Anastasiades, and the US’s readiness to constructively support the attempts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.  

President Nicos Anastasiades has spoken on the phone with US Vice-President-elect Mike Pence on Thursday, an announcement from the Presidential Palace said. 

On his part, President Anastasiades had congratulated the new US government and expressed the hope that the new government’s project succeeds.  

He also assured Pence of the Cypriot government’s will to further strengthen Cyprus-US relations in all sectors.  

The President also informed Pence on the current phase of the Cyprus problem and the latest developments.  

President Anastasiades noted that the Greek Cypriot side is committed to continuing the process to re-unify Cyprus.

Government spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides announced on Twitter that President Anastasiades was discussing bilateral relations and the Cyprus problem with Pence.

President Anastasiades is expected to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci on Thursday evening, for the first time since Cyprus talks hit an impasse in Mont Pelerin.
