Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier sent a joint message to Turkey, during the press conference that followed their meeting in Athens on Sunday. “Public games with the Lausanne Treaty cannot be the basis for policy”, stressed Mr. Steinmeier. FM Kotzias stated, “For Turkey to have a European orientation, it is necessary to implement international law, meaning that the Lausanne Treaty should also be implemented and respected”.
The two Ministers confirmed that Germany and Greece share the same views on the refugee issue and support the EU-Turkey agreement. They also signed an Action Plan for Greek-German cooperation in various fields, both on government and local government level. “In defending compliance with the Lausanne Treaty, which regulates not only Greek but also EU borders, we defend Europe itself”, stated President of Greece Prokopis Pavlopoulos in an earlier meeting with the head of German diplomats.
