Cyprus President: Turkey participation in talks sought 'for years'

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, speaking during a children’s event at the Presidential Palace on Monday night, has said that the government has been seeking Turkey’s participation in the Cyprus negotiations for years.

The President said: “For years we struggled to get Turkey to sit at the negotiating table, and this will happen in January, during the multilateral conference in Geneva.”

He added that the Greek Cypriot side is well prepared, has proposals, and is in cooperation with the Greek Government.

President Anastasiades said that the negotiations are currently at a crucial and critical point.

The President and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci are set to hold their first meeting on Tuesday, since both decided to restart negotiations on December 1.

President Anastasiades and Akinci have also agreed to meet in Geneva on January 9, submit maps on territorial adjustment on January 11, and hold a conference on Cyprus on January 12, with the participation of the island’s guarantor powers (Turkey, Greece, and the UK), and other relevant parties as needed.
