A written statement from the EU could be issued as regards the Cyprus problem and the union’s participation at an upcoming conference in Geneva, Sigma TV has learnt on Thursday.
Government spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides has told Sigma’s “Mesimeri kai Kati” program that after the European leaders are informed at the leaders’ summit on Thursday, there could be “tangible developments” on the part of the EU, as relates to the Cyprus problem.
Sigma learnt that the “tangible developments” the spokesperson referred to, could be a potential written statement on the part of the EU, regarding the Cyprus problem.
The government spokesperson has said that there is an active interest on the part of the larger countries in the EU to be informed on the developments in the Cyprus problem.
He added that Slovakia – who holds the EU Council’s presidency – has already asked to be informed one-on-one on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem.
The next country to hold the presidency, Malta, has also asked to be informed on the ongoing Cyprus talks, the government spokesperson said.
Christodoulides added that the EU is the best guarantee to reach a positive sign in the Cyprus problem.
President Anastasiades has arrived at the EU Summit, where he will inform his counterparts on the Cyprus problem.
Before his arrival, the President held a meeting with EU Council President Donald Tusk, where Anastasiades briefed Tusk on the Cyprus problem, and the security and guarantees issue.
A conference on Cyprus will be held on January 12 in Geneva, where the guarantor power’s of Cyprus security (Greece, Turkey, and the UK), the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides, the UN, will be present, along with any other relevant parties as needed.
