Cyprus spokesperson: Turkish Cypriot statements do not help solution efforts

Any public position expressed the Turkish Cypriot side as preconditions for a Cyprus settlement, do not help efforts to reach a solution, deputy government spokesperson Victoras Papadopoulos has said on Tuesday.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera on Monday, Akinci said that the guarantees issue should be re-evaluated in 15 years, following a solution.

Papadopoulos noted that President Nicos Anastasiades has clearly defined the limits within which he can negotiate.

Limits which should meet the expectations and concerns of the Greek Cypriots,” Papadopoulos said.

He said that at this critical and delicate phase of the dialogue, any public positions expressed by the Turkish Cypriot side as preconditions for a Cyprus settlement, neither help the ongoing process, nor the solution that should be approved by the Cypriot people.

The deputy government spokesperson added that the government does not agree with those public statements.

He pointed out that a solution cannot fall outside the agreed framework or the principles and values of the EU, of which the Republic of Cyprus is a member state and will continue to be after a possible solution.

Papadopoulos said that there is a need for the Turkish Cypriot side and others to focus on the aim to minimise the existing differences – instead of making statements – in order to achieve a real prospect of success at the conference in Geneva.
