Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades spoke with Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov on the phone today, according to a tweet from Government Spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides.
According to the hashtags, Anastasiades and Lavrov discussed the Cyprus Problem negotiations and regional issues.
SigmaLive has learnt, via government sources, that Russia is interested to participate at the upcoming Conference on Cyprus, due to be held on January 12, 2017.
Earlier on Friday, the President had visited the Russian Embassy to Nicosia to offer his condolences to slain Ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov.
CONFERENCE ON CYPRUS
The Conference will be held between Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, alongside the island’s three guarantor powers – the UK, Greece and Turkey.
The EU and US have also expressed their “readiness” to participate in the Conference.
On Thursday, Akinci said, after holding talks with Anastasiades, that “other interested parties will be invited, but not as participants.”
BACKGROUND
Anastasiades and Akinci decided earlier this month to resume their Swiss-based talks on January 9, 2017
On January 11 they are expected to present their respective maps on the territorial chapter.
On January 12, a Conference on Cyprus will be convened with guarantor powers and other relevant parties.
Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015 aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof, following Turkey’s 1974 invasion and illegal occupation on the island.
