The Treaty on the Establishment of the Republic of Cyprus will continue to be in force after the solution of the Cyprus problem, government spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides has said in response to Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci’s recent statements about talks in Geneva.
Christodoulides has said that at negotiations on the Cyprus problem, an evolution of the Republic of Cyprus from a unitary state to a federal state is being sought.
He added that there are many provisions in all the chapters to not create a legal vacuum during the evolution of the Republic of Cyprus.
The government spokesperson also reiterated that the Republic cannot be absent during discussions on the Guarantee Treaty in Geneva.
On Akinci’s statements, Christodoulides said: “If we all want to come to a positive conclusion, then we cannot but support the participation of the five permanent members of the Security Council and the European Union.”
He also added in regards to the Turkish Cypriot leader’s statements that there are no preconditions in the announcement made on December 1, regarding agreement on territorial adjustments, property, and co-governance.
Christodoulides said that the Greek Cypriot side will need to see what Akinci has meant by his statements, which is an interpretation of preconditions in order to be able to head to negotiations.
