Live report: Geneva conference on Cyprus to continue at technical level

The historic conference on Cyprus has ended, with an agreement for the discussions to continue on January 18 at a technical level.

Government spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides announced that the conference will be taking place at a technical level on the 18th, and that all relevant parties would selecting technical staff to represent them. 

A UN announcement has echoed the comments of the government spokesperson, adding that the UN “commends” President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci for their 20 months of “remarkable progress”. 

Christodoulides said that the Greek Cypriot technical representative will be negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis, while the EU would also be selecting technical representatives for the continuation of the talks on security and guarantees. 

Guarantor Powers

At the conference on Thursday, the Foreign Ministers of the three Guarantor Powers (Greece, Turkey, and the UK) were all present and started an initial discussion on the issue.

Christodoulides characterised the conference as a “historic moment in the Cyprus problem.”  

During a press conference in the middle of the day, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that Cyprus is a “hope” for the world in 2017.

President Anastasiades is expected to address the press on Friday at 12pm (Cyprus time).
