President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will meet anew on February 1 to discuss the further process and methodology to be followed in Cyprus discussions, the President said on Thursday.
Following his meeting with Akinci, the President said that comprehensive discussions will continue on all six chapters of the Cyprus problem.
He added that discussions on all six chapters (governance, security and guarantees, EU, economy, property, and territorial adjustments) will continue in Cyprus.
President Anastasiades said that the decision to the “comprehensive dialogue” in Cyprus was made so that work can be done to “mitigate any differences that exist, or if possible, conclude on the majority of issues.”
Asked if he will discuss holding another conference in Geneva with Akinci on February 1, the President replied: “It is among the issues that will of course be discussed. The conference in Geneva was not the start nor the end, therefore it is necessary to continue the dialogue on the important issue relating to guarantees.”
TURKEY’S STATEMENTS CREATE NEGATIVE CLIMATE
Commenting on statements made by Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Tugrul Turkes, the President noted: “As long as Turkish officials make relevant unacceptable statements, the only thing they are achieving is the creation of a negative climate.”
President Anastasiades added that he mentioned the Greek Cypriot position during his meeting today with Akinci.
Regarding the statements, the President added that such evaluations make it “inconceivable” for a Cyprus solution to exist.
On Thursday, Turkes said that the four basic freedoms being sought for Cyprus need to exist for Turkish citizens living on the island.
According to CNA, Turkes added that if such a framework is not accepted in a potential Cyprus solution than Greek citizens living in Cyprus should also not have access to the four basic freedoms.
Turkes highlighted that the four freedoms, Turkey is seeking for its citizens in Cyprus are the freedom of labour movement, freedom of entrance and exit to Cyprus, and the freedom to move capital.
