Cyprus issue negotiators to meet and "plan their future moves”

The Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot negotiators, Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami respectively, are scheduled to meet this morning to continue their Cyprus Problem negotiations.

CNA English reported that today’s meeting will focus on Wednesday’s talks between Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, “to plan their future moves”.

After his meeting with Akinci on Thursday, Anastasiades said they decided to meet on February 1 to agree on the procedure and methodology to be followed during the upcoming negotiations.

The President said last week that the negotiators briefed himself and Akinci on the Mont Pelerin, Switzerland-based discussions held between January 18 to 19.

NARROWING DIFFERENCES

“It was decided to continue the dialogue in Cyprus, on all subjects, with the determination to work, in order to narrow existing differences or if possible conclude on the majority of the subjects,” said Anastasiades.

The President added that “negotiations will continue on all six chapters”.

Commenting on if there will be another Conference on Cyprus, following the January 12 Geneva-based talks, Anastasiades said “this is going to be among the issues that will be discussed.”

“DIALOGUE MUST CONTINUE”

The President, outlined: “The Geneva Conference was neither the beginning nor the end and consequently the dialogue must continue on the important issue of guarantees.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied its northern third. UN-led talks aimed to reunite the island has been ongoing since May 2015.
