Major General James Illingworth was sworn in as the new administrator of the British Bases in Cyprus on Wednesday, a press statement from the UK Sovereign Bases said on Wednesday.
Illingworth has pledged to continue to strengthen the relationship between the bases administration and the Republic of Cyprus.
Speaking at Flagstaff House, the residence of the Administrator in Episkopi, he welcomed ambassadors and members of the Cypriot government and he promised to build upon the legacy left by his predecessor, Air Vice Marshal Mike Wigston.
He said: “I am absolutely delighted that you’ve all been able to attend and your very presence speaks volumes about the close and important relationship between the UK and Cyprus, particularly from my perspective on security and our shared ambitions.
“I just want to say a word about Mike Wigston’s achievements, particularly the work he has undertaken to deepen the relationship between the UK and Cyprus, the result of which is a truly modern and special relationship.”
Illingworth said that he is proud to lead the UK’s military and civilian team on the island and that he would work to face the challenges head-on, alongside his colleagues in the Republic.
He added: “We must face these challenges and opportunities together, as we have always done, with a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation.
“I stand before you incredibly proud and it goes without saying that I’m excited and looking forward to working with many of you in the next three years.”
