President Nicos Anastasiades has prepared a document with the core differences and convergences of the Greek Cypriot side in talks, government spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides told state television on Monday.
He added that the Turkish Cypriot side and the United Nations has been informed about the document prepared by the President.
The document, he said, “is of high importance, as it will contribute to the discussions, where significant disagreements are noted.”
In the meantime, Christodoulides added that the government has already received the support of the Cypriot positions from the member states of the European Union.
Regarding a Turkish demand to gain access to the four basic freedoms of the EU, Christodoulides said that the other member states are in complete line with the President’s positions on the matter.
He added that the government is in contact with all the other EU member states, and that their initial reactions show that their governments have the same approach to the issue of the four basic freedoms as Cyprus.
On the Cyprus talks – which have been at a standstill for approximately three weeks, after Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci abandoned the talks – Christodoulides said that steps will be taken to aid restarting the talks.
Commenting on UN Secretary General Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide’s statements after meeting privately with both Anastasiades and Akinci to review the issue in the Cyprus talks and potentially restarting the dialogue, the government spokesperson said that he hopes Eide’s optimism on restarting the talks proves to be true.
However, he added that there has not been a change yet in the standstill.
