President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Tuesday visited the tiny island of Pserimos for a celebration of the island’s 70th anniversary since the Integration of the Dodecanese island group into the Greek state.
“The symbol of Greek-Turkish friendship is the correct implementation of international law, as befits democratic and peaceful peoples,” Pavlopoulos said in a statement from out of the island’s military outposts.
He also repeated his “double message” to neighbouring Turkey, saying it was one of sincere friendship, good neighbourly relations and cooperation in difficult times. “We urge it, through Greece, to follow its European path, as befits its people and its democracy,” he said.
At the same time, he added, “we send a message that we are here to defend ourselves, respecting and implementing international law and European law as a whole. Especially the Lausanne Treaty, the sovereignty, the borders and, of course, the territorial integrity of Greece, which are also, since Greece is a member state of the EU, the borders, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the EU,” he stressed.
