Manos Konsolas: Greek PM treats tourism as a gambling bet

Greek main opposition New Democracy Tourism Sector head Dodecanese MP Manos Konsolas commented on the Greek PM’s statements on tourism as follows:

Mr. Tsipras continues to treat tourism as a gambling bet. Tourism, however, is not gambling but climate. Tourism cannot operate on an autopilot, as it requires structured and targeted policies. The  SYRIZA – ANEL coalition government elected overtaxation of the tourism product undermining competitiveness. The result of this policy was a reduction in travel receipts by 6.4% during 2016.

Tourism development cannot be attained in a sustainable manner, as long as there are excessive charges on our tourism product.

Tourism development cannot be attained when it is impossible to invest in tourist development projects throughout 80% of Greece.

A comprehensive Spatial Planning for tourism that will facilitate and attract broad and strategic investments so as to enhance tourist revenue and lengthen the tourist season is absolutely required. The country needs a polycentric development of tourism with large investments and fewer taxes.

The country needs a new government plan along with a serious and credible Prime Minister who inspires confidence.
