Anastasiades and Akinci to meet again on Sunday

President Nicos Anastasiadeas and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will be meeting on Sunday April 2, the UN announced on Monday.

The meeting between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders will be the first in approximately two months of stalled negotiations.

According to the UN announcement Anastasiades and Akinci will meet at a dinner hosted by the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide at the Ledra Palace hotel in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia.

Sigma TV has learnt that at the dinner an open discussion is expected to be held, as the UN is examining various formulas on disagreements both sides have in the negotiations.

Talks were stalled after Akinci left a meeting in mid-February.

Tensions were noted in the negotiations, after the parliament decided to pass an amendment that would make reference to a 1950 referendum on union with Greece (‘enosis’) in schools.

DISCUSSIONS CAN RESTART AFTER PARLIAMENT’S DECISION IS CORRECTED

Akinci’s spokesperson Baris Burcu has said on Monday that talks on the Cyprus problem can restart only when the decision of the parliament is completely corrected, in regards to the ‘enosis’ referendum.

In a written statement, Burcu added that the Turkish Cypriot leader has said “many times” that if the parliament’s decision is corrected then he would return to negotiations.

Burcu noted that Akinci told Eide he would meet with President Anastasiades for a social meeting, only if a new bill would correct the previous decision to refer to the ‘enosis’ referendum.

The spokesperson also said that Akinci told the UN Envoy he could meet with the President either on March 30, 31, or April 2.
