Cyprus was assured of Spain’s full support on the issue of four EU freedoms Turkey is seeking access to following a Cyprus issue settlement, SigmaLive learnt on Monday following a meeting of President Nicos Anastasiades and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.
According to an official Presidential announcement, in regards to the Cyprus problem, the Spanish PM expressed his interest in the process, and that he is in line with the Republic’s positions, which are that a solution cannot exist without the respect of the European acquis, or derogations from the EU values, such as the Turkish demand for access to the four freedoms of the union.
The President was accompanied at the meeting by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ioannis Kasoulides, and the government spokesperson, Nikos Christodoulides.
Following his welcome by the Prime Minister of Spain, the President of the Republic signed the Book of Visitors of the Moncloa Palace.
In his message the President wrote the following:
“I thank the President of the Government of Spain for his warm welcome at the Moncloa Palace.
I hope that this visit will further strengthen the already excellent bonds between Cyprus and Spain for the benefit of our people as well for the benefit of the European Union, where they both belong.
May our cooperation, based on friendship, common values and mutual respect, continues to grow into the future.”
