Greece among top four countries for transposing EU directives into national law

Greece ranked fourth highest among all EU countries for correctly transposing Community directives into national law in 2016, according to the Single Market Scoreboard published by the European Commission. In a year when the so-called “transposition deficit” doubled and 20 of the 28 EU member-states exceeded the deficit target of 1 pct, Greece stayed below the target and its transposition deficit increased by just 0.1 pct to 0.8 pct.

Greece also improved its compliance deficit (the number of incorrectly transposed directives) to 0.3%, ranking in the top five, and in its overall assessment.

The country’s performance was even more distinguished given the large numbers of directives on crucial issues that needed to be transposed within 2016, government sources noted. The good results, they added, were the result of the excellent cooperation between very capable ministry staff and the General Secretariat of the Government, which monitors and coordinates the transposition process.
