The castle of Methoni – essentially, the Castropolitia – is one of the most important and most beautiful castles in Peloponnese, Greece.
It was built by the Venetians when they became masters of the city in 1209. It is situated in a strategic location, on a rock that enters the sea, and is separated from the land by an artificial moat.
It is a classic example of a castled land that extends over a large area of 93 acres.
Moreover, it is an extraordinary natural harbor, which during medieval times was a station on the pilgrims’ road to the Holy Land, and a station for merchant ships from the West to the East.
The peak period of the castle goes back to the period of the 1st Venetian occupation (13th-15th c.).
