Greek PM and Juncker meet on the sidelines of EU Eastern Partnership Summit

Meeting EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Friday, Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras briefed him on the recent destructive floods in western Attica and on government initiatives to provide relief aid for flood victims.

The two leaders met in Brussels, on the sidelines of the EU Eastern Partnership Summit taking place in the Belgian capital on Friday.

Government sources described a very warm atmosphere at the meeting, during which Tsipras outlined ideas for a five-year plan for the construction of flood protection works in Greece, in cooperation with the European Investment Bank and the Commission’s support.

They also discussed the progress achieved toward completing the third review of the Greek programme, with both sides expressing conviction that completion was imminent and a shared desire for the end of the Greek programme in August 2018.

Upon his arrival at the summit, straight after leaving Paris and a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Tsipras sat next to and addressed German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who congratulated him on receiving the two prizes awarded to him in France, by the French political review “Politique Internationale” and the Paris bar association.

Regarding the EU Eastern Partnership Summit agenda – relating to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine – the government sources noted that Athens supports efforts for reinforcing the rule of law, implementing reforms and their convergence with the European acquis.
