BRUSSELS – Greece and all small EU member-states must assume an active role in talks for the future of Europe and the completion of the Economic and Monetary Union, said European Commission Vice President Jyrki Katainen and Greek main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during a discussion hosted by the Bruegel economic think-tank in Brussels on “Responsibility to Reform Europe”.
Mitsotakis said that Greeks know that the future of their country is within the EU and have supported Greece’s continuing membership in the EU even at their toughest moments. Greece must claim for itself its reform agenda and make consistent efforts to apply reforms that will strengthen the country within the Eurozone, he noted.
The economic crisis in the EU, he added, proved that the architecture of the Eurozone was deficient and changes in its management must be instituted so that crises within and without the EU can be managed.
The Vice President of the European Commission Jyrki Katainen and New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed the need for Greece and other small countries in the EU to participate actively in the discussion on how to reinvent the EU and the Eurozone, during an event organized by Bruegel in Brussels on Thursday.

Mitsotakis said Greece must take part in the conversation on Eurozone’s future noting that Greeks supported their membership in the euro-area even during the toughest periods of the economic crisis.
On his side, Katainen said he believed that if all member-states and European leaders keep the European agenda high in their priorities, a compromise will soon be found on what needs to be done in the future. He also stressed that it is important for European citizens to get involved in this debate, and that small EU countries should propose ways to reform Europe’s future and complete the integration of the Economic and Monetary Union.
