Experts from the Greek government’s Interior and Foreign Affairs Ministries presented on Monday a final proposal to Interior Minister Alexis Charitsis, which will allow Greeks living abroad to vote in Greek elections, greekcitytimes.com reports.
According to government sources the proposal recommends that all diaspora Greeks who are citizens and also registered to vote will be able to vote, regardless of the length of their absence from Greece.
Greek citizens abroad will be able to vote in person at consulates or special electoral centres to be set up.
Charitsis is expected to invite party representatives to brief them on the report, before drafting a bill for Parliament.
“It’s the first time the Greek state deals in a coordinated and methodical way with this convoluted political and technical issue,” Charitsis noted, thanking the committee members.
