Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat will welcome today Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, as part of the initiative of the 6th South EU Summit, int.ert.gr reports.
The initiative, known as EUMed7, was set up in Brussels on 17 December 2013 to address common issues in the Mediterranean countries. The first Summit was held on 9 September 2016 in Athens, following an initiative by the Greek Prime Minister, and the talks focused on coordinating their action on common issues, from economic development to regional security.
In the summits that followed and took place in Lisbon, Madrid, Rome and in Nicosia last summer, the leaders focused on EU’s top challenges, from climate change to migration and multiannual financial frameworks.
During the summit and at the Plenary Session in Malta, the participating leaders will evaluate the election results and discuss the candidatures for EU’s highest posts as well as the EU’s priorities in shaping the strategic agenda with a focus on issues of particular concern the Mediterranean, such as migration and future economic growth in relation to the digital perspective.
The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades will have the opportunity to inform and raise the issues of Turkey’s provocations and acts of unlawful interference as well as the violation of Cyprus’ AOZ.
