Leaders of the Panepirotic Federation met with the new US Ambassador to Albania Yuri Kim at the State Department on Friday morning on enhancing rights for ethnic Greeks in Northern Epiros and throughout Albania.
The Albanian government’s plan for the property registration procedures in Himara has caused unrest and major reactions in the Ethnic Greek Minority in Albania, protothema.gr reports.
The announcement by the representatives of the Greek minority stresses that the Albanian government, with its draft law, is creating more problems for Greek legal owners, who are in danger of losing their property permanently.
The President of the Panepirotic Federation of America Nicholas Gage sent to Tornos News the following letter, commenting on the issue:
“You recently published an item that officers of the Panepirotic Federation of America, which I serve as president, met last week with the U.S.Ambassador to Albania, Ms. Yuri Kim, to discuss treatment of the ethnic Greek minority in the country.
You followed that information, which is correct, with reports that some groups in the Himara region of Albania have been protesting the new property law that Tirana wants to enact in the near future and implied that the Panepirotic Federation opposes the law as well, which is not correct.
While the law is not perfect, it is a vast improvement of the mess of regulations now in effect, and we feel it offers all Albanians, including ethnic Greeks, the best chance to gain title to their property in 30 years. In fact, the law was drafted with the advice of American legal experts including Simos Dimas, whose family comes from Himara, after consultation with Greek leaders in Albania including Himara as well as the Himara Society of America, and the recent protests came as a surprise to us.
Please make sure to correct your previous news item and set the record straight.”
