Greek Minister: Commissioners propose activation of emergency support

Alternate Migration and Asylum Minister Giorgos Koumoutsakos revealed late on Thursday in an interview with public broadcaster ERT that the College of Commissioners has proposed to the European Parliament and the European Council the activation of an Emergency Support Instrument for the coronavirus in Greece, ANA reports.

Koumoutsakos pointed out that this was an “additional tool for the quick release of funds.” This tool was re-activated in 2016 by the European Council for three years to deal with the refugee and migrant crisis in Greece. The College proposed a sum of four billion euros and its proposal is based on the logic that “Greece is facing a combination of two challenges at the same time, migration and coronavirus,” as the alternate minister explained.
