In his speech at an online discussion on “East Med, Tripartite cooperation (Greece-Cyprus-Israel) and its role in regional energy security and economic cooperation in the era of COVID-19 and beyond”, organized on Tuesday by the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce, US State Department Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Energy Resources Francis Fannon, asked to “stop all provocative actions that could undermine investor confidence and political stability in the region”, int.ert.gr reports.
Mr. Fanon also underlined that “international maritime law recognizes that islands have EEZs and continental shelf like any other region”.
For his part, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell called on Turkey to respect the sovereign rights of Greece and Cyprus and to quit drilling in areas where there is EEZ or territorial waters between the two countries.
