French Consul-General: 'Greece-France Alliance' motto as topical as ever

France has always been and remains Greece’s staunchest ally, as demonstrated by recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, the outgoing Consul-General of France and Director of the French Institute in Thessaloniki Philippe Ray noted in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, released on Saturday.

“Our relations are excellent and the slogan ‘Greece-France Alliance’ that dates back to the restoration of democracy [in Greece] in 1974 is still extremely topical and has a bright future,” Ray pointed out, citing both France’s stance during the financial crisis, as well as recent events in the Eastern Mediterranean, as tangible examples.

The consul-general, who is due to depart in August, also spoke about his experiences in the city and the Greek people, his work at the Thessaloniki French Institute and the exchanges of Greek and French academics, his efforts to promote Francophonie and the teaching of French in Greece and the significant French contribution to life in Thessaloniki, going back almost 400 years.
