Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis defended the decision of the EU to centrally coordinate the purchase of vaccines for the member states through the European Commission, stating that the smaller countries would face serious negotiation problems on their own, int.ert.gr reports.
The Commission has been widely criticized for its handling of the vaccination strategy and for a catastrophic dispute with the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca over the contract for the supply of coronavirus vaccines.
Mr. Mitsotakis, nevertheless, defended the decision of the central purchase of vaccines, describing it as “correct”. “I can tell you, as a small country, I would not want to negotiate alone with the big pharmaceutical companies. I am glad that Europe as a whole has negotiated. “Obviously there were problems but let’s not lose the big picture,” he told Reuters.
The Greek Prime Minister also said that he is quite satisfied with the overall management of the pandemic in Greece, which has proportionally suffered fewer cases and deaths than many other EU countries despite the recent deterioration.
