An article highlighting the need for a “vaccination passport” in Europe and referring to the proposal for a vaccination certificate put forward by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was published in the German newspaper “Handelsblatt” on Sunday, ANA reports.
The article, written by the paper’s correspondent in Athens, noted the European Union must reach an agreement as quickly as possible on a uniform vaccination certificate, adding that further delays will also create an additional bureaucratic cost and that the certificate proposed by Mitsotakis several weeks ago aims to facilitate tourism and business travel.
In any case, the author pointed out, the airlines and the tourist sector want a uniform proof of vaccination but the European Commission was delaying action on this, while it referred to the criticism leveled at European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Commissioner Stella Kyriakides over the handling of the vaccines issue.
The European Commission now risked losing valuable time on the issue of a vaccination certificate as well, it added, since anyone that completes vaccination will, in any case, receive proof of this, so why should it not be an electronic document valid and recognized throughout Europe, the author noted.
As for the yellow vaccine passport handed out by the World Health Organisation, the article pointed out that it is not forgery-proof, has no photograph of the holder and cannot be read by a machine, making it unsuitable.
