“The officers of the Coast Guard operate not just with bravery and determination but also with respect for the international law and with priority for the protection of human life. When traffickers are allowed – or even supported – to place thousands of our fellow human beings at risk in the Aegean, Greece rescues human lives. This is exactly why we continue to reinforce the Coast Guard and its officers,” stated Greece’s Shipping and Island Policy Minister Yiannis Plakiotakis on Thursday, from the port authority headquarters on the island of Samos.
“Ι want to praise the women and men of the coast guard for their superhuman efforts, both night and day, to protect Greece’s sea borders. Their effort makes use of the heightened operational capacity that we have achieved for the Coast Guard through a major procurement program that is underway, which has resulted in an impressive reduction of migrant flows in the last two years,” Plakiotakis noted.
