On this day 20 years ago, the Declaration of Thessaloniki – issued during the Greek presidency of the Council of the European Union – accepted that “the future of the Balkans lies within the European Union,” the Greek prime minister’s office said on Wednesday, ANA reports.
Referring to the event of June 21, 2003, the office of caretaker PM Ioannis Sarmas said: “The Declaration of Thessaloniki opened the way to the accession of several countries of the region to the European Union and continues to comprise the cornerstone of the future accession of others. Greece has since remained a fervent supporter of the Western Balkans’ European prospect, as it believes that the full integration of the entire region in the European Union is in Europe’s best interest.”
