Visit of Olga Kefalogianni to Santorini, Sikinos, Folegandros, and Anafi

Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni conducted a four-day tour of four Cycladic islands—Santorini, Sikinos, Folegandros, and Anafi—as part of an open dialogue with local communities and stakeholders. The visit focused on implementing a new model of sustainable tourism development and is linked to the recent signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation establishing the first DMMOs (Destination Management & Marketing Organizations) in the municipalities of Thira, Anafi, Sikinos, Ios, and Folegandros.

The tour began in Santorini, where the Minister visited the renovated Archaeological Museum of Thira and the exhibition “Cycladic Women – Untold Stories of Women from the Cyclades.” This landmark exhibition highlights the role of women in the Cycladic region from prehistoric times through the 19th century, offering a fresh perspective on the cultural identity of the Cyclades.

“Santorini is not only a global tourist destination but also a place with a deep cultural footprint. The exhibition ‘Cycladic Women’ reminds us that culture is the heart of our identity and a core pillar of a sustainable tourism model,” noted Ms. Kefalogianni.

The visit continued at a local winery, accompanied by Thira Mayor Nikos Zorzos and Santorini Hotel Association President Antonis Pagonis, where they discussed wine tourism as a growing thematic travel sector with high added value.

Next was Sikinos, where the Minister, together with the Mayor of Thira, was welcomed by Sikinos Mayor Vasilis Marakis. The visit focused on cultural landmarks such as the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi and the Episkopi temple. Special mention was made of the restoration of the mausoleum of Neiko, an important architectural monument. The Minister emphasized the importance of preserving the island’s authenticity as part of a mild, sustainable tourism approach.

In Folegandros, Ms. Kefalogianni met with Mayor Kyriakos Marinakis, discussing critical issues such as visitor management, preservation of the island’s character, and enhancing tourism offerings in a way that respects the local community and environment.

The tour concluded on Anafi, where the Minister met with Mayor Iakovos Roussos and local stakeholders. Discussions focused on development prospects guided by sustainability, the protection of natural and cultural capital, and the improvement of infrastructure for both residents and visitors.

This four-island tour highlighted the Ministry of Tourism’s strategic goal to:

Strengthen regional dialogue

Promote the cultural identity of each destination

Encourage collaboration through the new DMMO framework

As the Minister stated,

“Sustainable tourism development is not just a goal—it is a necessary condition for the prosperity of local communities and the long-term appeal of our destinations.”
